Dhoop has no bamboo core — it's a solid, self-supporting roll of herbs, resins, and natural binders, shaped and dried until it can hold its own structure. Stick incense (agarbatti) is fragrant paste rolled around a thin bamboo stick that stays inside as it burns. Dhoop is the older of the two traditions. Read more in What Is Dhoop Incense?
Most mass-produced incense uses a charcoal base as cheap, predictable fuel, with fragrance oil added on top. Our dhoop is made entirely from natural herbs and resins instead — no charcoal, no bamboo core. That changes the scent, the ash, and the burn. Full breakdown in Charcoal-Free vs. Traditional Incense.
No — and we're upfront about that. Charcoal-free means less soot and no charcoal odor competing with the fragrance, which is a cleaner burn. It does not mean smoke-free, and we'd rather be precise about that than overclaim. Ventilation still matters regardless of what you're burning.
Our sticks are charcoal-free and bamboo-less, so the whole stick is compressed botanical material — there is simply more of it burning than in a thin charcoal stick, and some fragrant smoke is normal. Two things help a lot: light the tip slowly and let it catch evenly, because a big flare at lighting produces thicker smoke; then wave the flame out gently so the tip smolders, and keep the room ventilated. If a full stick feels like too much for a small room, you can snuff it out halfway and relight it later.
Stand the stick upright in the ceramic holder included in your box — dhoop has no bamboo core, so unlike agarbatti it can't be planted in an ash pot. Light the tip, let it catch for a few seconds, then wave the flame out gently — rather than blowing on it — so the tip smolders. Keep it away from drafts for an even burn, and always rest the holder on a stable, heatproof surface.
